Scout Travel - Smart Luggage Tag, Finder & Alarm

Another winner from Knog, but…

I really like how Knog has integrated their product into the “Find My” network. Leveraging Apple’s network is been an absolute boon for end users.

I initially purchased the bike tracking device. Absolutely fell in love with the product after a full season of riding. I’ve even completed submerged the device.

With the new travel tags and the amount of travel I do, this product is a no brainer. I’m currently using the tags to track my tools.

The only thing I would change is the way the product is built. Considering these are luggage tags I’m not sure they are going to take the absolute pounding that luggage receives.

I am really hoping they hold up to my weekly traveling attached to my Pelican Case. Oh, and the “but” part. I would like to see the cabling system improved. Having an adjustable cable would be fantastic. I want to prevent access to my Pelican case completely. People like to get into the case to rummage through my belongings.

Would be great to have a camera affixed to the device too.

Review From a Friend - Knog Brand Scout Travel Bluetooth luggage Tag Review

We were recently given a set of Knog Scout luggage tags, but unfortunately since we are Android people we had to regift our to a friend with an iPhone. Based on his through review we cannot wait until these are available for Android. So without further ado, here is his review:

Summary: reliable, good functionality and App, poor attachment design. Overall 4.5 / 5 Stars

On my very last trip to Alabama, my checked bag got lost for 20 min until I realized that someone else had pulled it off the carousel and piled it amongst their 5 other bags for their family. A product like the Scout luggage tag would have made it easy to immediately locate my bag and avoid the hassle. More importantly, it would have allowed me to alert the person if they took it with them by sounding an alarm. For this reason alone I recommend the product but warn anyone buying one to be patient with assembly.

Unpacking and evaluating the tag itself: the sleekly designed tag is available in muted colors (I got one army green and one black) comes in a recycled paper packaging with some instructions on the package. The user manual is available by booping a QR code on the package. Other items in the package are 2 different length attachment cables, the attachment hub, and a sturdy metal key that also has the device QR code. The tag plastic feels robust and there is a water resistant flap covering the USB-C charging port. A small reset button on the bottom is just recessed enough to shield it from inevitable rubbing during luggage handling. A red LED signals charging, pairing, and can be set to strobe to alert either the user or anyone else. My immediate reaction is that this is a sturdy, reliable device that will stand up to my weekly flight itinerary.

Digital user manual and the App: The manual is well drawn with an IKEA level of user friendliness to get you going in no time setting up the Knog App and pairing is super easy. You can rename the tag, and set parameters such as motion alarm with different sensitivities, chose different alarm tones, vibration on/off, and emergency disarm with or without mobile device. (I chose to allow without). I couldn’t find a way to download additional alarm tones, so that might be a welcome firmware update down the road, although the standard ones are just fine for achieving the task. I tried the alarm on various settings and it is sure to get your attention along with everyone else in the airport!

Manual interface and attachment set up: here is the big opportunity for improvement. Attaching the tag to your luggage is done by unscrewing a plastic “hub” with metal covers on each side. The metal key fob is needed to do this step. Not a big deal if you read the instructions but it is counter intuitive. Once unscrewed, you have to separate the metal covers from the plastic hub halves. This is not detailed in the usermanual and required finagling with a two screwdrivers, a pair of vicegrips and my thumbnail. Once separated, the attachment cable has swages on each end, which must be pushed into notches in the plastic hubs. This step is easy to do, but it’s very sensitive and hard to keep notched. Next, the plastic hubs must be inserted into the tag with each cable end pushed into the swage notch, then the metal covers pushed into place, and screwed down using the metal key.

Sound complicated? Yep, it is! Oh, and I’ll bet 50/50% that you forget to actually thread the cable through your luggage and have to undo and redo half this process. My guess is that this design was motivated by the fear of thieves simply unhooking the Scout tag and absconding with your dirty laundry and chintzy souvenirs. Bravo! However, the attachment cable is about 22 guage diameter and would be easy to snip using a $4 pair of wirecutters. I verified this with the left over (shorter) cable in about 5 seconds. My fix is to put a drop of superglue on each side of the attachment cable in the swage notch. This will, unfortunately, permanently fix what you attach it to, so chose wisely!

The frustration with attachment is not too bad once you get the hang of it, and only needs to be done the one time for setup, and again if you ever want to switch luggage. Overall the utility, reliability and well designed App make this a high value-added product.

Smart Luggage Tag

Gone are the days of writing your personal contact information on a disposable paper tag. With Scout Travel, you can store your contact instructions in a digital format, which can be easily accessed by scanning the unique QR code printed on Scout Travel. Exactly what contact information you share is entirely at your discretion, and can be updated in real-time via the Knog App. In addition, when someone scans your QR code and sees your details, they’ll also be prompted to send you a message from the contact details page. If they do, you’ll be alerted that someone has scanned your tag and / or got in touch and their message will be emailed to you. E.g. “Your bag has been left with Qantas baggage services”.

Utilise the Apple Find My network

With Scout Travel attached to your luggage, you can enjoy the peace-of-mind of always being able to check exactly where your belongings are anywhere, anytime, by simply using the Apple Find My network from your iPhone.

Motion-Sensitive 85 dB Alarm

The best security features are those that deter the loss of your luggage in the first place. Which is why the 85db motion-sensitive alarm at the heart of Scout Travel’s design is a truly outstanding feature. From sitting in a busy café to storing luggage in a hotel lobby, increase peace-of-mind by arming Scout Travel via the Knog app, with any subsequent movement of its accelerometer triggering the impossible-to-ignore 85db alarm on Scout Travel, while also triggering an audible alarm on your iPhone (when in Bluetooth range). This alert gives you the opportunity to take action and recover your belongings.

Secure Attachment

Every aspect of Scout Travel has been designed with security in mind, and nothing communicates this more overtly than our tamper-proof security cable attachment. Constructed from a braided stainless-steel cable coated with a non-abrasive nylon, Scout Travel’s tether allows for a highly secure attachment that won’t damage the very thing it is attached to. Every Scout Travel comes supplied with two cable lengths, to cater for different needs. The tether attaches to Scout Travel via an anti-tamper security bolt that requires the use of the supplied Knog anti-tamper tool to remove it.

No Subscriptions Fees

Unlike GPS-based trackers, Scout Travel’s compatibility with the Apple Find My network means that once you have purchased a Scout Travel there are no ongoing subscription fees to worry about.

Separation Alerts

There’s no need to stress about leaving your carry-on behind or someone taking your luggage off the bus. With separation alerts enabled in the Apple Find My app, you’ll get a notification if your Scout Travel drops out of bluetooth range. You can also set Trusted Locations, which are locations where you can leave an item without receiving a notification.

USB-C Rechargeable Battery

Scout Travel is USB-C rechargeable and utilises a high-performance 155 mAh LiPo battery, removing the need for single use batteries. A fully charged Scout Travel provides up to 2 months of use between charges. We have also taken the guesswork out of knowing the amount of remaining battery life, as the Knog app will send a notification to your iPhone once the device has only 20% charge remaining, giving you plenty of notice to recharge the unit.

Built Tough For Real-World Travel

Scout Travel has been designed for travel. Constructed from fibre-reinforced plastic and then over-molded in silicone, Scout Travel is purpose-built to cope with the rigorous demands of travel; however rough things get. Backed by Knog's 2 year warranty.

Remote Chime Function

Many travellers have been in a scenario where they need to identify their belongings in a pile of very similar-looking luggage. This is where Scout Travel’s remote chime function is useful. Using the Knog app, you need only activate their remote chime and a sound will emit from your Scout Travel, making finding your luggage easy.

NFC Technology & Lost Mode

If a Scout Travel attached piece of luggage is lost, you can open Apple Find My and turn on Lost Mode. Then once it is detected by a device in the Apple Find My network, you will automatically receive a notification. You can also set it so someone can get your contact info by tapping the Scout Travel with an NFC-capable smartphone (most do).

Charge & Pairing Indicating LEDs

Our Intelligent LEDs take the guesswork out of using your Scout Travel. The LED glows Blue when it is actively paired with your iPhone. This same LED glows Red whilst charging and then turns Green once fully charged.

Water Resistant

Scout Travel is showerproof but please don’t go chucking it into the hotel pool.

Privacy Is Always Priority

Only you can see where your Scout Travel is. Your location data and history are never stored on the Scout Travel itself. Devices that relay the location of your Scout Travel also stay anonymous, and that location data is encrypted every step of the way. So not even Knog or Apple know the location of your Scout Travel or the identity of the device that helps find it.
